Notting Hill Carnival violence saw eight stabbings - the most since 2016 - as well as sexual offences and assaults on police

 

Notting Hill Carnival: Eight people were stabbed on Monday, the highest level since 2016, with more than 308 arrests including for sex attacks and assaults on police over the two-day event.  

A 29-year-old man is in a critical condition after being stabbed at the carnival, and another 19-year-old man is in a 'serious but stable condition'.

Six other men, aged 18, 19, 20, 25, 28 and 40, were also stabbed over the weekend - they sustained non life-threatening injuries.

More than 50 officers were assaulted by being kicked, punched, spat on, bitten, head-butted and even urinated on from upper floor windows.

Images and footage from the Carnival show people brandishing weapons and have been posted on social media.

One showed a young man appearing to approach a group of men while waving a large weapon in the air, as many watch on in shock.

There were 308 arrests across the two days of the carnival, with 198 arrests on Monday for a range of offences including possession of offensive weapons, assaults on police officers, possession of drugs and sexual offences.

On Sunday, there were 110 arrests for offences including possession of offensive weapons, assaults including on police officers, possession of drugs and sexual offences.

Arrests at the carnival are up by a third on last year.

Metropolitan Police commissioner Sir Mark Rowley said he was worried about the use of weapons at the Notting Hill Carnival but stressed the majority
