Record broken as around 1,000 detected on small boats in single day

The record for the number of Channel migrants crossing in a single day this year has been smashed, as more than a thousand were detected on small boats on Monday 22nd August.

The previous record of 696 in a single day was reached at the beginning of this month, as migrants were intercepted and pulled off 14 small boats on 1 August.

Over the weekend, weather conditions were too poor in the Channel for small boats to safely navigate.

But with flat calm conditions, and very light winds arriving on Sunday evening, the first boats since the end of last week took to the water.

At half past midnight, the Dover lifeboat arrived back into Dover harbour with around 50 people onboard.

An hour later, the Ramsgate lifeboat arrived with 58 people who were taken off two small boats.
