The trial of Guy Fawkes and his fellow conspirators began. They were charged with treason for attempting to blow up the Houses of Parliament in November 1605.
Man found not guilty of attempted hacking murder of Police officer
A man who carried out a vicious attack on a police officer with a machete has been found guilty of grievous bodily harm with intent at the Old Bailey on Thursday, 23 January following a trial.

1788The British First Fleet, led by Arthur Phillip, sailed into Port Jackson (Sydney Harbour) to establish Sydney, the first permanent European settlement on the continent. 26th January is now commemorated as Australia Day.
